Mykonos Brewing Company
Mykonos Brewing Company is a collaboration of four partners – Yiannis Paraskevopoulos of GAIA Wines, businessman Yiannis Myzalis and brewers Angelos Ferous and Janos Bako. The brewery was founded in 2016 on the iconic island of Mykonos, located in the Cyclades island chain of Greece. With the islands’ popularity with tourists, the group believed Mykonos would be the perfect canvas to capture a wide ranging audience from around the world, thus gaining maximum exposure for their products. The brewery’s first production was released in the summer of 2017. Angelos and Janos are certified brewers and distillers, with Janos holding a degree from the University of Budapest and Angelos holding the M.Sc. in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The pair met while working at BrewDog, Scotland’s largest microbrewery.
While in Greek, the name Mikònu means “from Mykonos”, the concept derives from Greek mythology with the labels representing the mythological stories of the Giants of Mykonos. Legend has it that the Giants were born from Mother Earth, with human bodies, thick hair and full, bushy, long beards. Mother Earth summoned the Giants to Mount Olympus to fight the gods as revenge for killing the Titans, her beloved children. The prophecy stated that in order to fight and defeat the Giants, the immortal gods must fight alongside mortals. Thus Zeus called upon his mortal sons, Hercules and Dionysus to fight alongside them in this epic battle that took place at Mount Olympus. In order for the Giants to summit the mountain for the battle, they used the boulders from Mykonos to create “steps” up the side of the mountain. Once the Giants were defeated, they were cursed to be buried under the rocks of Mykonos forever. It is believed that the rugged and mountainous terrain of Mykonos with its steep cliffs represents the buried bodies of the Giants. For the brewery, “each Character is a Giant and every Giant is a type of Beer”.
